2008 Field Log
Monday August 4
The weather was in the upper 70s today so we couldn't pass up the chance to spend the day in the field. It sure paid off, what a great day we had! We removed two jackets from the field and finished another that we started the other day. We collected three very small bones, too small to plaster. After lunch, we struck pay-dirt. Will found a nice big bone and I found three smaller bones right next to each other! They are all in pretty good shape and our excitement became double! It had been a few days since we found a bone, so that baby is still producing. We have a couple of groups coming out in the next few days and we can't wait to get back into the field. On a side note, student Kristen and her friends Tim and Emily left yesterday. We enjoyed them all coming up and were all very happy to see Kristen again this year. It was also great to meet Emily and Tim. We hope to see them all again!
Tuesday August 5
Another solid day out here in the field! We were joined today by Celeste and her son Ty from L.A. We spent the morning in the 'Big Al' site and found two new bones! One of them is a very small and skinny rib, sized greatly matching the rest of our dino. Celeste found the other, though we are not quite sure what it is. After lunch we prospected around an area close to last year's Torosaur site. We found a few bone fragments and the remains of a site from a few years ago. It still has frill left in it, so that spot is something we are going to want to keep an eye on. It was a warmer day today but still very cool for August!
Coen Site
Wednesday August 6
We are covered in plaster after today's activities in the field! Joined by Joe and his kids June and John from Minnesota, our field team continued to jacket and prepare the bones in the theropod site for removal. June and John helped with three jackets and were excellent at preparing plaster! Lots of digging was done as well and June found a tiny fish tooth! It was a great day, not too hot, and lots of dino digging! Three jackets made it back to base camp with us, making five total removed so far. We still have a few left to take care of though, and I don't think that site is done producing! Tomorrow we have a big crew joining us, so far the count is at least 13! It should be a busy day!
